Engaging with the school can be confusing. Where do I start? Who should I contact first? How can I engage the school without seeming “pushy.” Developing a rapport with the school is a first step. This includes the class teacher and the special needs co-ordinator who can liaise with staff regarding any challenges, learning difficulties, adjustments or resources that are required for your child in mainstream classes.
Classes are structured carefully and may include children with both typical and atypical abilities. Students may include those diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) CP (Cerebral Palsy), SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) Hyperlexia, Dyslexia and Giftedness.
It is important to note that there may be other children who are in the process of obtaining a diagnosis and therefore are not receiving funding for resourcing and support in the classroom.
Once diagnosed the school can then allocate resources to support them. IEP’s, liaising with psychologists and other health professionals is part of the teachers’ role. It also involves additional reporting, documents, meetings, and administration obligations for each of these children. Additionally, there are also specific learning outcomes for those children struggling academically.
Teachers provide scaffolded work, extension, and specific strategies to teach the various learning styles of students. These strategies are developed carefully and altered as necessary They are implemented after careful consideration of the dynamics of the class. Students with auditory or visual processing deficits, working memory, executive functioning, fine motor difficulties and anxiety are catered for.
